This article describes a nursing experience for an ICU patient with spinal cord injury from an accident. The author assisted the patient in overcoming physical disabilities and psychological stress through a social support system, including family, nursing, and social groups. Data were collected through interview, observation, and listening during the nursing period from February 28 to March 8, 2010. Roy's adaptation model was used for data analysis. The patient's major health problems included ineffective respiratory airway clearance, dysfunction of physical activity, and anxiety. To solve these problems, the author established a good nurse-patient relationship, provided disease-associated care information, assisted the patient in solving the problems and coping with stress for anxiety reduction. Therefore, the patient could proactively face medical treatments and procedures, receive rehabilitation, and resume normal daily activities after patient discharge. The author expects that this study report can be shared with clinical nurses who care for patients with the same diagnosis. |
