Medical workflow-related neglect causes not only waste of medical costs but also negatively impacts patient safety. This article describes an experience of applying a barcode laboratory system to improve patient identification safety. A barcode medication administration system was applied between the years 2006 to 2008. It integrated order entry, medication preparation, and bedside medication administration into a system to minimize human errors. In 2010, the bar-code laboratory system was extended to the clinical laboratory department. Because more laboratory test-related errors occurred during collection of sample specimens than during specimen analysis, specimen labeling using the barcodes started before sample analysis. The barcode labeling was used during the entire workflow from laboratory order entry to specimen delivery to sample examination. After the implementation of the barcode laboratory system, the number of specimen mismatch decreased from 49 to 4 in an eight-month period. |
