Hospital acquired infection is a vital indicator of care quality. Blood stream infections during hospitalization increase medical costs and length of hospital stays. Severe infection can cause patient mortality. An improvement project was designed as a result of higher central line associated bloodstream infection rates in the author's hospital, as compared to other hospitals. The policies and procedures for installation of the center line were revised. Competency of performance improved from 69% to 100%. With revised policies and procedures for central line care, the competency of nursing care improved from 53% to 100%. The aim of improving care quality and patient safety has been achieved. |
