This study aimed to investigate the effects of emergency department nurses' knowledge on domestic violence and their attitudes and behaviors toward caring for the victims of domestic violence. The study surveyed 92 nursing professionals who were working at a medical center in central Taiwan, in a cross-sectional way. Seventy one valid questions in a questionnaire were self-designed and developed by the surveyed group. The survey data showed that the average percentage of the nursing professionals possessing domestic violence- related knowledge was 66.9%, the average scores in the attitudes and the behaviors were 35.77 (out of the total 175) and 66.83 (out of the total 80) respectively. Based on the survey data, the score on knowledge was higher in the group without religious belief. The attitudes were more positive in those older surveyed nurses with many experiences and well educated. Those who were married or had children were more positive. The behaviors were closely proportional to the attitudes. These discoveries suggested develop nursing continual education programs on caring for the victims of domestic violence, for the purpose of improving nurses' knowledge, attitudes and behaviors towards the victims of domestic violence, and integrating the continuity of nursing care for the victims. |
