The purpose of this project was to increase the flexibility and availability of nurses in hospital. Due to the decrease of childbirth, the required nurses for routine works in baby room were reduced. However, the dramatic increasing of the childbirth was occasionally happened in hospital. Therefore, the nurses in baby room were arranged to have extra works for orders in the unusual situations. To these nurses, this arrangement would increase their burden and pressure that caused several nurses to leave the hospital. To resolve this problem, this project intended to recruit nurses from other departments for supporting the nurses in baby room. A cross training program over departments was performed in this project. The program consisted of selection of nurses, teaching, and technique training for two months. After the training courses, the recruited nurses was evaluated and dispatched to work in baby room. In one and half years of performance (from July 2006 to December 2007), the situation in baby room was improved and a good result was observed. The persons of nurses in baby room could be reduced from 24 to 20 persons and the required days/nurse for standby were reduced from 10 to 6 days in a month. The recruited nurses were increased from 0 to 9 persons and the availability of the nurse for baby room increasing 45%. It was estimated to save the cost of nursing at NT 140,000 dollars per month. Furthermore, the leaving rate of nurse in baby room was reduced. The report herein was anticipated to provide a model of cross training and human resource management to increase the flexibility and availability of nurses. |
