A structured questionnaire was used. With purposive sampling, the subjects were nursing professionals, patients, and families of the medical centers, metropolitan hospitals, and local community hospitals. 712 effective responses were obtained. The results showed that (a) nursing professionals, patients, and families agreed that nursing assistants contributed to safe patient care by correctly assisting patient transfer from bed to wheelchair during hospitalization, (b) nursing professionals, patients, and families agreed that nursing services under the nursing assistants' scope of practice included accompanying patients and recording amount of intake and output. Services which were disagreed to be performed by nursing assistants were invasive nursing activities, such as suction of sputum and insertion of a urinary catheter. This research suggested that the government should facilitate in hiring licensed nursing assistants and establishing the educational training program for nursing assistants. |
