Shi Shuo Hsin Yu was popular from Jiajing to Wanli in the mid of Ming Dynasty. With some historical investigations, the book, called Shi Shuo Xin Yu Bu, was spread far and widely at that time. It was adapted from Shi Shuo Xin Yu by Wang Shizen and Wang Shimao. The scholars in Qing Dynasty condemned the phenomenon that Shi Shuo Xin Yu Bu was more popular than Shi Shuo Xin Yu . In the first part this essay aims to expound and prove when Si Koo ministers kept a record of Shi Shuo Xin Yu Bu, and then analyze Wang Shizhen and Wang Shimao’s commentaries on Shi Shuo Hsin Yu . This has proved that the editor of Shi Shuo Xin Yu Bu, no doubt, was Wang Shizen. Shi Shuo Hsin Yu Bu was spread because of Wang Shizen’s status as a celebrity, and the Wang brothers’s comments on Shi Shuo Hsin Yu, resulting in the popularity of the book in the Ming Dynasty. They led the scholars in Ming Dynasty to be interested in Shi Shuo Hsin Yu and do research on it. |
