We report a case of herpes zoster ophthalmicus complicated with mild uveitis in an elderly patient, with subsequent development of hyphema and vitreous hemorrhage. The patient, a 76-year-old man, was admitted for treatment of herpes zoster ophthalmicus in the right eye. Intravenous acyclovir (250 mg, 3 times daily) was given for 5 days, both hyphema and vitreous hemorrhage developed in the right eye 3 days after acyclovir was disconinued. The immune systems of elderly patients may be more compromised than those of younger people, so prolonged treatment with intravenous acyclovir may be necessary. |
