The purposes of this study are to explore the factors associated with uncertainty among breast cancer women. A cross-sectional study design was conducted with a purposive sample size of 100 breast cancer women at a teaching hospital in northern Taiwan by using a structured questionnaire. The instruments used in this study included Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale for Adult (MUIS-A), Symptom Severity Scale (SSS), Social Support Scale, the Chinese Health Questionnaire (CHQ-12), and Demographic. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, Spearman's correlation, and Stepwise regression. The results showed a moderate high level of uncertainty in breast cancer patients (2.92±0.49), and age, education years, symptom severity and physical and mental health were statistically associated with the uncertainty (r=.20, p<.05; r=-.27, p<.01; r=.28, p<.01; r=.20, p<.01). The severity of arm swelling and education years could predict the uncertainty of breast cancer patients (F=8.99, p<.01; F=11.69, p<.01). These could explain 16% total variance of uncertainty.Healthcare providers should be alert to factors contributing to the uncertainty among breast cancer women. Clinical interventions to decrease the severity of arm swelling should be developed to reduce breast cancer women uncertainty and improve breast cancer women' quality of life. |
