Skin-to-skin contact after birth can not only stabilize the vital signs, improve crying and prefeeding behaviors for newborns, but also increase the opportunity for interactions between the mother and child. After reviewing cesarean birth mothers' charts from January to June of 2007, the results showed that there are many factors associated with low skin-to-skin rates (19.5%), including nurses and nurse practitioners' factors, mothers' personnel reasons, and health care providers' unfamiliarity with the time, methods, and operational procedures. Thus, the aim of this project was to increase the rate of skin-to-skin contact with the father after cesarean section. After implementation of a multidiscipline promotion policy, standard of skin-to-skin contact with father, and a sharing experience group with successful fathers, holding education at the outpatient department, and adjusting nursing staffing standard, the rate of skin-to-skin contact increased to 98.64%. In addition, fathers felt very satisfied with the skin-to-skin contact care. The mean score was 4.39 points (total=5 points). This project can not only practice the skin-to-skin contact with father after birth, but also achieve a success to improve the outcomes of skin-to-skin care. |
