In museums, it is common that exhibition texts of history are written with a linear time concept, and displays of cultures of others are quite often presented in a timeless notion, resulting in only years that interpret time embodied in objects. However, the goal of this paper is to argue that it is necessary to reconsider that temporality of objects themselves should not be taken as a single phenomenon; socio-cultural perspectives of domestic groups should be incorporated in the meaning of time concept through object exhibition. By reviewing the unique cultural exhibition of the Tu-Niu Hakka Museum, which restored a traditional Hakka house of Liu's Family, one could observe that objects on exhibition are not only those in display cases; the time concept was embodied overall in the Liu's Hakka House, its architecture and objects such as pedigree table in the main reception hall, water vat in the courtyard, tales about Feng-Shui, ancestral rituals and offerings, etc. The uniqueness of the Liu's Hakka House comprises of crucial stimulants to be re-constructed as the Tu-Niu Hakka Museum; more than that, it breaks through conventional time completion of objects on display to vitalize this museum. Under this particular exhibition context, the concept of time revealed has re-presented the diverse concepts and interpretations of the Liu's Family about their past, history and self-identity, and has reflected the conversion of seasons, historical context of the family and development of family identity. To start by studying the notion of time through this case, it could help us to rethink deeply the meanings of objects in different socio-cultural contexts, and to know better of the significance, presentation and meaning of time in culture with more diverse perspectives. |
