I spent about four happy and productive months as a visiting scholar in the academia Sinica's Institute of Sociology. This was my first extended period of working and living in Taiwan since I had finished studying sociology at National Taiwan University thirty years previously. In the meantime. I had done a lot of work on Mainland China, including several periods as a visiting Scholar at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing and in the Tianjin Academy of Social Sciences. There were two striking differences between being a visiting scholar in China and Taiwan. The first difference was in the academic environment for doing research, the second in the public acceptance of the research. |
