Finally, here I am, at the cradle, or the ruin, of the enigmatic Frankfurt School. The Direktor, Ludwig von Friedeberg, an old professor who had worked with Horkheimer, welcomed me, and handed me a book of introduction to the Institut fur Sozialforschung. The volume is heavily historical, with pictures of its original building in the 20, its refuge in New York 1934-43, it's Frankfurt ruin in 1945, its rebuilt in 1951, current building where I stand...and its future that 1 have yet to figure out.
