Thirty Chinese herbs commonly used as antiinflammatory drugs in traditional Chinese medicine were selected for immunopharmacological activity test. Human mononuclear cells (HMNC) were used as target cells. Methanolic or water extracts of the Chinese herbs were added into HMNC cultures. Subsequent, cell proliferation were determined by 3H-thymidine uptake. The results indicated that 16 out of 30 methanolic crude extracts inhibited the HMNC proliferation. Only 3 out of 30 water extracts of Chinese herbs (MLS-024, MLS-027 and MLS-030) contained inhibitory agents that suppressed HMNC proliferation. The inhibitory mechanisms may involve the blocking interleukin-2 (IL-2) production. Since adding IL-2 to HMNC cultures, restore cell proliferation. Plans are underway for the isolation of pure compounds from these Chinese herbs and the elucidation of their mechanisms of action. |
