Spatial Planning Specialist (SPS) is a profession dealing with complex social-economic issues that involve people, works, times, lands and assets which has a broad implications to well-being of the general public. With great influence comes with great responsibility. The professional conducts of SPS cannot be confined to just the basic principle of being compensated in accordance with the services rendered. They have to be able to address three fundamental values of a modern society – environmental sustainability, social justice and economical prosperity. A spatial planning specialist needs to evaluate success of every project based on meeting the three fundamental values in order to achieve the ultimate goal of the SPS profession - maximizing public interests through justice and equality. Work ethics are usually judged by workers' behaviors and attitudes to themselves, colleagues, employers and general public in workplace. Therefore, a positive attitude in workplace is the first step to demonstrate good work ethics for a young spatial planning specialist. This article interprets what constitutes to a positive work attitude from aspects of integrity, service, efficiency and quality. It also outlines behaviors and conducts that should be avoided in workplace, and discusses their negative effects to career development and professional networking based on author's personal experience and observation on others. The intent is to help young professionals and students in related fields interested in joining the SPS profession in near future understand what are expected of them, and to facilitate their career development. |
