The purposes of this survey were to investigate the prevalences of health behaviors including substance abuses, suicide ideation, and suicide attempt among youth and young adults who were not at school. A self-reported questionnaire including cigarette use, alcohol use, betel chewing, illegal-drug use, suicide ideation, and suicide attempt was collected on all men eligible for military service of Taipei County in 2001. A total of 5,542 answered the questionnaire. 64.3﹪of them had tried cigarette smoking, 22.9﹪had had the habit of alcohol drinking, 59.4﹪had tried betel chewing, and 4.0% had the experience of illegal-drug use. Among all illegal-drug, amphetamine, MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxy- methamphetamine), and FM2 (flunitrazepam) were used more frequently. We also found that all men eligible for military service of Taipei County in 2001 had had the tendency for greater potential for lots of substance abuse if they had any kind of substance abuses. As for suicide ideation and suicide attempt, two of the most important reasons were family and susceptibilities. The study wishes to serve as a reference for the policies of youth and young adults in Taipei County Government and we also suggest that Taipei County Government could work more harder in psychological consulting for dropping out of school students, and in health promotion youth and young adults in the future. |
