Basal cell carcinoma of the eyelids is the most common eyelid cancer. Between 1980 and 2000, 79 patients with histopathologically confirmed eyelid basal cell carcinoma were collected at National Taiwan University Hospital and Far Eastern Memorial Hospital in Taiwan. Seventy-three cases were primary tumors. Six cases underwent tumor excision at other hospitals and were then assigned to National Taiwan University Hospital for treatment of the recurrences. The follow up study more than 3 years was undertaken for 72 patients. Males were slightly more than females. The mean age at diagnosis was 62.1±12.4 years. In primary basal cell carcinoma of the eyelids, tumors developed most commonly on the lower eyelid. Most of the lesions were found within 1 cm. The most common treatment modality was surgical excision. The rate of accurate diagnosis was 80.8%. The mean interval to recurrence was 45.6±39.3 months. The recurrence rate of 9.1% was noted. In summary, the long-term follow up is needed after treatment of eyelid basal cell carcinoma. |
