This article described the nursing experience of a degenerative arthritis patient undergoing a left total knee replacement surgery. The author took care of this patient from October 13 to October 20, 2008. Gordon’s eleven health functional patterns were applied to assess the patient’s condition with the data collected through observations, interviews and physical assessments. Four health-related problems were identified: anxiety, acute pain, impaired physical mobility, and knowledge deficit. During the nursing process, the author provided assistance, guidance, listening and support to establish a good rapport with the patient, and planned appropriate nursing interventions and rehabilitation nursing care based on the patient’s needs and the course of disease, allowing the patient to reach optimal health condition. The author wished to share this unique nursing experience with other colleagues. |
