The purpose of this study was to explore the knowledge of and management behavior of clinical nurses toward skin tears. A cross-sectional purpose sampling method was used. A total of 151 participants were chosen from a medical center in eastern Taiwan. A skin tear knowledge scale and a skin tear management behavior scale were used to collect the data. The results were analyzed using descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, Scheff's test, Pearson's correlation and stepwise regression analysis. The rate of correct responses with respect to skin tear knowledge was 66.94%. Skin tear management behavior showed an average score was 65.90% (SD=9.30). The correlations between skin tear knowledge, age, work experience and skin tear management behavior were all positive. Skin tear knowledge, age and work experience were significant predictors of skin tear management behavior and these three predictors explained 40% of the total variance. This study will help nurses to take care of skin tear patients by improving the nurses' knowledge and management behavior. It can be used as a reference for the design of a continuous education program for clinical nurses. |
