I report on the nursing experience of a male oral cancer patient who was being cared for in the intensive care unit from August 8th to 15th, 2007 after surgery. Data was collected by means of direct observation of the patient and directed conversation. Physical, mental, social and spiritual assessments were used to identify problems in the nursing process. The results found that the patient had acute pain, risk of infection and anxiety. Nursing intervention and positive encouragement were given and relaxation skills were also taught to decrease both his nervousness and concern about his condition. The direct involvement of his family was also encouraged so that they might participate in his recovery. Eventually, the patient showed a positive attitude toward this therapeutic approach and became physically and mentally stronger. |
