This report describes nursing experience when assisting a patient who had undergone a left hand amputation caused by an occupational accident. The patient suffered from an altered body image and functional disabiliy. Over the nursing period, the author applied the skills of observation, listening and conversation to collect data and also used Roy's adaptation model to assess and improve the patient's health issues. The results showed that there were pain problems, body image disturbance and self care deficits in dressing and grooming. Through this process, it was possible to provide individual and appropriate nursing interventions that helped the patient to face his disability and supported him as he learned how to care himself at home. Thus, it was possible to promote his self-care abilities and improve his quality of life. |
