A cross-sectional, descriptive correlation study was designed to examine the relationships between parenting behaviors, family health resources, and children's social adjustment in school-age children with asthma. A total of 210 families of children with asthma were recruited from a medical center in Taiwan. Parents were asked to fill in various forms including the parenting behaviors instrument, family inventory of resources for management, and child and adolescent adjustment profile. The data were analyzed by SPSS 13.0. Results showed that parenting behaviors and family health resources were positively associated with children's social adjustment. Stepwise regression analysis demonstrated that parenting behaviors and family health resources were predictors of children’s social adjustment, which explained 23.7% of the total variance of children's social adjustment. The results provide a scientific knowledge regarding the effect of family resources on social adjustment of school-age children with asthma as well as suggest ways to improve family-centered nursing interventions and thereby improve children's development. |
