This article reports nursing experience while treating a woman who was newly wed and had cervical cancer at stage I. She accepted a radical cervicectomy to preserve her childbearing ability. The author was the primary nurse. The nursing period covered from March 28 to April 23, from April 27 to May 4 and from May 24 to May 27, 2005. Roy’s Adaptation Nursing Model was used to assess the patient's health problems. The main problems found were anxiety, urination (alterations in the pattern), a partial lack of knowledge and alteration in the patient's sexuality. The patient was interviewed, her behavior during the hospital stay observed and all relevant data collected. In addition, the patient was interviewed by telephone after discharged from the hospital. This case report offers others our experience of the application of individual nursing intervention when helping patients to face anxiety about this operation, indicates the approaches used to correct her inaccurate sex knowledge, shows how re-construction of her ego identity was developed, describes how lowering of her negative emotions was brought about and shows how she was persuaded to complete the chemotherapy courses. |
