The purpose of this study was to explore the knowledge, attitude and behavior of women participating in a community screening program toward pelvic floor muscle (PFM) strength exercises. A cross-sectional convenience sampling method was used. One hundred and fifty seven women were selected from participants in a community health screening program in Jian and Xiulin Township, Hualian County, Taiwan. Structured questionnaires and PFM tests were used to collect the data. The results indicated that 52% of the participants performed weak PFM strength exercises, which were evaluated by vaginal palpation. Participants lacked knowledge but had a positive attitude toward PFM exercises. Furthermore, only 29.9% practiced PFM exercises during their daily life. Knowledge, attitude and behavior toward PFM exercises were significantly positively correlated. There was significant positive correlation between PFM strength and knowledge, attitude and behavior toward PFM exercises. These findings suggest that health education and PFM exercise intervention programs are needed to increase women’s understanding of PFM exercises and behavior that promotes health. |
