This paper presents an overview of the field of calligraphy therapy from 4 perspectives: (1) experimental research into the practitioner’s physiology, mental state, emotions, sensory perception, cognition, movements and associated brain activities; (2) empirical comparisons of calligraphy treatment with the mainstream medical interventions such as biofeedback, acupuncture, medicine, meditation and progressive muscle relaxation; (3) conducting clinical trials of calligraphy treatments with patients of schizophrenia, nasopharnangeal carcinoma (NPC), Alzheimer’s Disease and Depression in 4 major hospitals; and (4) development of a biofeedback system of calligraphy therapy, some professional training programs for calligraphy therapy as well as the formation of an International Society of Calligraphy Therapy. These efforts have aimed at promoting calligraphy therapy as a new branch of behavioral medicine as well as a science for health promotion and rehabilitation. |
