Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) have been employed in episodic memory research for decades and have improved our understanding of cognitive processes involved in the formation and retrieval of episodic memory. This article, which reviews recent significant ERP findings of episodic memory, is organized into five sections. The first section describes the development of the concept of episodic memory. The second and third sections review ERP studies, which are related to retrieval and encoding processes in episodic memory with a special focus on ERP effects identified in these processes and their functional significance. The forth section describes how findings from the second and third sections are utilized to investigate memory distortion. A discussion of future research directions is provided in the final section. |
