The present study has two main goals: to explore how the young people at the middle adolescent stage perceive their relationships with parents, and to discover the transitional mechanisms for the changes of relationships during their adolescent years. In this article, the contents of parent-adolescent relationships are presented. Thirteen students from vocational education system were interviewed. Results showed that there were five types of parent-adolescent relationships, including “authoritarian parenting induceing dread and alienation”, “constant dependence inducing affection but powerlessness”, “being open, intimate, and having respect for parents”, “spoiled and doing as one wants” and “replacing mother’s role inducing independence and autonomy ”. Deep probing revealed that these relationships were different in three dimensions: the presence of role modulation, the quality of dialogue, and the degree of harmony. |
