This case report describes the nursing for post-operative experience of a patient with oral cancer. The author assessed the patient by clinical observations, interviews, data collections, and the eleven-item Gordon Functional Health Measure during the caring period (June 18, 2007 ~ July 9, 2007). The patient was diagnosed suffering from some psychological restrictive problems, such as the changing of body image, the feelings of hopelessness, and danger of suicidal ideation after his surgical operation. During hospitalization, the author used some nursing information and interventions to help the patient overcome the mental discomfort. Besides, consulting skills were used frequently. The patient was encouraged to express his emotion by using the skill of empathy, and he had developed some motives of self-nursing. Most important of all, the patient had accepted his changes of body image and had eliminated the intention of suicidal ideation through actively concern and accompanying from the nursing staff and his family. By means of this case report, the author realized deeply that the nurse could provide applicable medical suggestions to patients and do good for their health with individual and complete nursing care. |
