This article described maternal experience of kangaroo care with a premature twin under the nursing instruction. Data collection was conducted by participated observation and telephone and inhome interviews. The verbal and non-verbal interacting behaviors between mother and premature twins were transferred to eight process recordings. Using content analysis, five themes were inducted, including giving oneself, recognizing the baby, developing bonding, being a mother, and sharing happiness. During the period of practicing kangaroo care, the mother could observe the physiological and behavioral responses from the babies. She could manage all situations related to the baby and also improve self-confidence, reduce anxiety, and increase parent-infant attachment that helped the babies sleep well and increase body weight. This case report confirms nursing function to build up a caring environment for a mother to conduct the kangaroo care and improve the mother’s self-confidence. Hopefully, this article could be as a reference for nursing professionals offering premature baby care. |
