The purpose of this project was to enhance the safety of the ward from radiation hazard. Current radiation protection practice in the ward had been evaluated from 3 aspects including personnel, facilities, and policies. First, regarding personnel, 45.61% of nursing staff have full recognition on radiation protection. Around 24% of the patients and 16.66% of their families did not follow the protocol of radiation protection. Second, about the facilities, all investigated wards were short of lead shields. Last, regulations of radiation control areas and standard operation procedures and provision of continuing education programs were all insufficient. Therefore, we designed this special project to install more lead shields and radiation hazard warning signs, to set up standard operation procedures for ward radiation protection, to hold continuing education courses about radiation protection, and to educate patients and their families to cooperate with radiation protection procedures under nursing staff’s guidance. After the project had been implemented, the rate of standard practice of radiation protection in the ward increased from 0% to 100%. |
