A premature baby usually has to face stimulations from external environment and medical treatment immediately after delivery and subsequently miss the opportunity of attachment with its mother. The purpose of this case study was to describe the experience of using touching skills to assist a premature baby to cope with the environment of prenatal intensive care unit and improve the relationship between the mother and her infant. Data was collected by physical assessments, observations, and interviews. The responses of the preterm baby while facing external environment changes, stimulation, and its mother were recorded. Three primary health problems were discovered, including disorganized infant behaviors, readiness for enhancing organized infant behaviors, and impaired mother and infant attachment. The authors applied adequate touching skills such as holding care, massage, and kangaroo care to provide a humanized environment for the baby. Introducing and teaching these skills to mothers could help to improve the relationship between mother and infant. |
