To most pregnant women, labor is one of the most important and stressful events. Endurance of the labor stress depends on not only the personal characteristics of a woman but also the spouse’s constant support. The purpose of this study was to improve the proportion of expectant father presenting during labor and delivery. This study employed both qualitative interview and questionnaire survey to explore the reason of the low rate of expectant father of presenting during labor and delivery. The findings showed that the lacking of information about this supporting system, insufficient mental preparation and training, and inconsistent recommendation from doctors were three major reasons. In order to incorporate the new health policy of “expectant father presenting during labor and delivery”, proposed by the Bureau of Health of Taipei City Government, the research team had listed “the expectant father presenting during laboring and delivery” as a routine prenatal health education and incorporated the expectant fathers participating in larbor and psychological adaptation into childbirth educational courses. After 6-month period of prenatal health education, the rate of expectant father participating during labor and delivery increased from 9.08% to 14.56%. Although such number was low, the increase of 60% was significant for short term outcomes. |
