The aims of the study were to investigate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among population receiving health examination at a medical institution and analyze the factors associated with metabolic syndrome. Two thousand and three hundred and forty-five adults with a mean age of 49 years were selected from a medical institution in southern Taiwan. Subjects’ characteristics, including age, gender, height, weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, plasma glucose, serum triglycerides, and high density lipoprotein cholesterol were correlated with the metabolic syndrome status defined by the Adult Treatment Panel III in 2001. We found that the prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 23.1% in men and 22.8% in women. The prevalence was the highest among population aged 51-60 years. Waist circumstance, blood pressure, serum levels of triglyceride, fasting glucose and high density lipoprotein cholesterol were significantly associated with the metabolic syndrome. There was no gender difference for the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. Our study indicated the importance of metabolic syndrome and encouraged the public taking preventive strategy to reduce the risk of it. |
