The obesity has become one of the major epidemic diseases in many developing and developed countries worldwide. We presented the prevalence of obesity and examined the association of obesity with blood lipoprotein, blood sugar, and blood pressure among 572 adults who attended a physical check-up program in a medical center in southern Taiwan. The prevalence of obesity was 24.2% for men and 23.3% for women, respectively. This prevalence increased as age increased among women, while it peaked at the age between 41 and 50 among men and decreased as age increased thereafter. The prevalence of abdominal obesity was about 30% for men and around 10% for women, and the cases mainly were from women in the age group of over 60. About 30-35% of the men who were aged over 40 had abdominal obesity. Obesity was found to be associated with several test results, including high density lipoprotein, triglyceride, blood sugar before meals, blood pressure, and index of arteriosclerosis. The obese adults are advised to control their body weight and regularly monitor their blood lipoproteins, sugars, and pressures to prevent the occurrence of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. |
