The purposes of this study were to explore the patients’ perceptions of pain, the levels of pain relief and satisfaction with pain management in the emergency department (ED). A convenience sample of 60 medical ED patients who presented with chief complaint of acute pain was interviewed by using a structured questionnaire and a 0-10cm Visual Analog Scale (VAS) before leaving the ED. Results indicated that the average pain scores were 7.90 on arrival and 3.46 before leaving. About 78% of the patients perceived pain relief after receiving pain management and the improvement achieved significant difference (p< .01). The score of patient satisfaction with pain management was 3.87 on a 5-point Likert Scale. The patient satisfaction with pain management was positively associated with the perceived pain relief (r= .52, p< .01), the caring by nurses (r= .57, p< .01), and the caring by doctors (r= .84, p< .01). The results of this study could serve as references for healthcare providers to assess and manage patients’ pain in the ED to improve the quality of pain management. |
