The purpose of this case study was to describe how nurses assisted an 81-year-old woman to pass through the grief period and accomplish the tasks of grief after losing her husband. After each of six consultations with the widow, interviews and observations were written down in a process recording format. Data were analyzed using Worden's grief counseling principles (2001) and grief response categories: feelings, physiology, recognition, and behaviors. Results revealed that the widow completed the four grief tasks in 3 months. Findings familiarize nurses with grief consulting techniques that help those who lose their loved one process their grief and adapt to a new or different life. |
