The purposes of this study were to investigate the prevalence of adolescent sexual behavior before marriage and to analyze the relationship among adolescent demographics, family factors, and practicing safe sex. Subjects were recruited from a convenience sample of students from a university, a junior college, a high school and a vocational high school in Taipei and in the Tao-Yuan areas. Results showed that 1) the prevalence of sexual intercourse experiences was higher in 5-year junior college students than in 2-year junior college, university, high school, or vocational high school students; 2) for male students, the average age for their first sexual intercourse experience was 16.17 years and the average number of sexual partners was 2.34; for female students, the average age for their first sexual intercourse experience was 16.64 years and the average number of sexual partners was 1.67; 3) students whose parents had an education above junior college level had a higher prevalence of sexual experiences. Students whose family incomes were unstable, whose parents' marriages were unhappy, and who were not living with their parents had more sexual experiences. The findings serve as information for health educators to educate students about sex and safe sex behaviors and practices. |
