Born in Yi-lang County, Taiwan, Yuyu Yang was a well-known sculptor, environmental designer and architect. Regarding the research of Yuyu Wang, most of them focus on his sculptures, environmental design works etc. Yet, he also made cartoon, illustrations, cover design, and so on. In this paper, the author utilized the Harvest Rural Periodical and Yuyu Yang corpus to explore the development of graphic design in Taiwan between 1945 and 1960, and the significant role of Yang's graphic design. It had been found that Yang's graphic artworks had a strong bound with the social history. The artistic styles of Yang's early works cast great influences not only on the art scene in China and Tokyo in the 1940s such as Art Deco and New Woodcut Movement, but also on the political situation as well as artistic trend in Taiwan in the 1950s. |
