The evolvement history of plastic motorscooters in Taiwan mainly originated from the third phase of the world due to the innovative development in materials and engine technologies. The products matched the demands of consumers, which developed a situation showing 'the fittest survives', and came the Golden Era. To investigate the evolvement process and influential factors of the motorscooters imported from Japan to Taiwan from 1981 to 2008, data collections on major companies, interviews and correspondences of relevant staff, and complementary materials from the famous 'Motorcycle Magazine' which recorded the development of two-wheeled motorcycles in Taiwan were analyzed. The evolvement process can be divided into three periods: tech importing, model modification, and independent innovation. Each period has its own influential factors: (1) internal factors relating to intra-company such as design source and design organization; (2) external factors relating to outer environment such as habit, regulations, trend, life style, consumer demand, energy crisis, etc. The modeling of products varied in different periods and evolved into diverse orientations. Slating board style paid more attention to the speed, while the half-slating board style of the head-shaking style also gradually turned to focus on the speed. Therefore, the style of speed is the evolutional direction of motorscooters in every period. This study recorded the product evolvement of the plastic motorscooters in Taiwan, and can be used as the references for future industrial design, as well as product planning and research in relevant industries. |
