Though Taiwan's information industry has recently much enhanced its competitiveness in the international market, it still faces the challenge of effectiveness in product innovation. Design, undoubtedly, plays a key role in the process of enhancing business competition and value-added product innovation. By means of an empirical approach, this study exploresdifferent modes of design strategies adopted by firms in Taiwan and their effects on design performance. The primary findings of the study can be summarized as follows: 1) there exists a significant gap between the expectation and the satisfaction on each of the design strategic attribute; 2) through a cluster analysis, two types of design strategy are identified -- 'product differentiated' and 'cost focused'; 3) the 'cost focused' firms tend to perform better on 'budget achievement' and 'schedule achievement', while the 'product differentiated' firms tend to perform better on 'design patents'. The results of this study would provide some insights for information firms in the application of a competitive design strategy. |
