Goblet cell carcinoid (GCC), also named adenocarcinoid tumor, is a rare and aggressive malignant tumor of the appendix. We reported a case of a 51 year-old man presenting with acute appendicitis, but pathologically diagnosed as goblet cell carcinoid. Grossly, the outer aspect of resected appendix was involved by acute inflammation, with thick purulent coating and marked hyperemia serosa. Microscopic examination showed not only acute suppurative appendicits, but also an infiltrating tumor diffusely invading the appendiceal wall and extending into the mesoappendix. The patient received further right hemicolectomy due to diagnosis of appendiceal goblet cell carcinoid, with invasion into the mesoappendix. Careful pathological examination is warranted as further surgery and follow up are necessary for this aggressive tumor. |
