Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation was developed clinically 35 years ago. Currently, bone marrow is not the only source for stem cell harvesting. Peripheral blood stem cell transplantation and cord blood transplantation were performed successfully in 1985 and 1988 respectively. In addition to the management of hematologic disease and hereditary metabolic disorder, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation are crucially important in the field of anticancer treatment and gene therapy. Initially, graft failure, graft versus host disease and recurrence of underlying illness were three major problems in bone marrow transplantation. The advantages of CBT are helpful for solving these troubles through specific immunologic mechanisms. Further effort into the studies of CBT should allow the development of effective transplantation for the highest number of adult patients. |
