An external quality assessment scheme was undertaken in 1998 by Chang-Hua Area Medical Network in order to evaluate the interlaboratory differences in many clinical biochemical parameters including glucose, total protein, albumin, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, uric acid, cholesterol, triacylglyceride, aspartate aminotrans-ferase, and alanine aminotransferase. This inquisition was divided into three phases. The key point of each phase emphasized assessment, improved by oneself, and guidance individually. At the first-stage investigation, the medical laboratories of the Chang-Hua area reached 76.5% (52/68) qualified. Among these medical laboratories, dividing with the grade of the laboratory, the teaching hospital (100%) including would-be medical center, regional hospital. and district teaching hospital had the highest qualified rate, followed by private medical laboratory (88.9%), district hospital (66.7%), and health center (58.3%). At the second stage, fourteen laboratories accepting re-test still had seven of them unqualified. All unqualified institutions at the second stage acquired improvement, after accepting guidance and assistance at the third phase. These results revealed that the external quality control scheme emphasizing equally investigation and guidance was really beneficial to move up the clinical biochemical test, quality inside an area. |
