Nasal irrigation is an adjuvant therapy to improve acute sinusitis, allergy and common cold symptoms in children. Two researchers performed comprehensive search on the subject-related literatures from Index to Taiwan Periodical Literature System, Chinese Electronic Periodicals Service (CEPS), Medline and PubMed. The researchers conducted systematic literature reviews and meta-analyses with application of JBI (Joanna Briggs Institute) appraisal instrument. The literatures were assigned levels with the tool of JBI Levels of Evidence. The RevMan 5 software was adopted to perform meta-analysis. The results shows that nasal irrigation is correlated to improvement of nasal stuffy nose and sleep quality due to acute sinusitis, allergy and common cold in children. In conclusion, through meta-analysis, evidence-based researches indicate that nasal irrigation not only be used as an adjuvant to benefit children with age of two to 18 for stuffy nose secondary to acute sinusitis, allergy and common cold, but shorten the time taken for medication administration. Nasal irrigation should be applied with precaution to children at very young age or with glottal insufficiency, swallow dysfunction, immediate post-nasal operation or a history of severe adverse effects. |
