This study describes a nursing experience of caring for a 35-week premature infant with pneumothorax. During the nursing care period from October 8 to 14, 2012, the author collected data through observation of the infant and interview with the baby's parents. The author analyzed the data and identified the major health problems: abnormal respiratory pattern secondary to respiratory distress and pneumothorax, potential injury related to neonatal jaundice, and potential change in the parent-infant attachment relationship. The author applied the theory of developmentally supportive care in assessing the infant's behavior and physiological needs. The author further provided the family with adequate knowledge for caring for the preterm infant and encouraged the entire family to participate in the care plan of the infant. The author also worked with other health professionals to improve the infant's breathing patterns and offered psychological support for the promotion of a positive attachment relationship between the infant and the mother, further enhancing the mother's confidence in caring for her infant after discharge from the hospital. |
