A chelating resin, crosslinked poly(2-Acrylamidoglycolic acid-co-Methyl acrylate) (PAGA), was synthesized through a copolymerization of 2-Acrylamidoglycolic acid with Methyl acrylate and Divinylbenzene for adsorbing Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. The adsorption tended toward equilibrium at 20 min and the equilibrium adsorption capacity was 0.86 mmole/(g PAGA). The adsorption isotherms of Cu(II) by PAGA followed the Langmuir isotherm. When the pH of Cu(II) solution was greater than 3, the adsorption capacity was affected insignificantly. In the range of pH 1-3, the adsorption capacity decreased with decreasing the pH of Cu(II) solution. Adsorption of Cu(II) was affected slightly in the presence of NaCl and KCl. However, adsorptions of Cu(II) decreased with increasing the concentration of MgCl2 and CaCl2 in Cu(II) solution. PAGA is a good reusable adsorbent for the uptake of Cu(II) because the re-adsorption capacities exceed 90% of initial value after 5 cycles of adsorption-desorption operations. |
