This is a preliminary report of the first year's study on the adolescent adjustment of the Taiwan Aborigines. The field works have been done among those tribes of the Atayal, Ami, Bunun, Paiwan and the Yami. About 3/4 of the young peoples from every group have left their villages for the cities and most of them work there as laborers with low economic and social status. Most of the aboriginal factory workers change their job frequently which reveals the dissatisfaction and maladjustment of these culturally minority young workers. The proportion of the unmarried female and male is 100/192, and 40% of young girls marry to peoples other than their own tribal fellow. The phenomena show that the aboriginal young men may have difficulties in getting suitable mates. Judging also from the fact that the divorce rate of these mountain tribes is much higher than the plain living peoples, we may say that the marriage life of many aboigines is somehow uneasy. From other aspects of our survey, such as schooling, ethnic-relations, alcoholism and prostitute behavior, we found that the aboriginal adolscent adjustment to modern setting in the present time is in rather difficult condition, and something should be done urgently in dealing with these problems. |
