CHINESE VOLUNTARY ASSOCIATION AND LEADERSHIP STRUCTURE IN A MALAYAN TOWN

國人從事華僑之研究者甚多，有關華僑之著述達一千五百餘種（參看拙編東亞華僑研究參考書目），但能以現代社會科學之方法，從事華僑社會之實地調查研究者則鮮有之；其以此類方法研究華僑者則以西方學者為多，而西方學者對中國之基層文化實甚隔膜，且對華人旅居區域之複雜方言亦難於把握，故其研究少數成功之學者外大都事倍功半。

This paper devoted to the analysis of Chinese voluntary association and leadership structure，is the first part of my study on the social structure of a Chinese community in southern Malaya. The materials were collected in my preliminary field survey undertaken in August－September，1963.
