Taiwan in the Shadow of a Rising China

It is a great honor and pleasure to be here in Taiwan talking to the annual conference of the Association of International Relations. I would like to thank Professor Tzong-Ho Bau for inviting me to give this address and, of course, I would like to thank all of you for coming out to hear me speak. My topic for today is “Taiwan in the Shadow of a Rising China.” I would like to cut into this subject by focusing on a simple question that is profoundly important for everyone in the audience: what are the implications for Taiwan of China’s continued rise?
