Among all the activities of introducing Wedtern techniques into China undertaken by the Jesuits during the late Ming and the early Ch’ing Dynasties, the most successful one was the production of the Huang-yu ch’ uan-lan t’u(皇輿全覽圖)。This is a map which was surveyed and drawn mainly by the French Jesuits under the order of the K’ang-his Emperor. This project marked the first effort in Chinese history to construct a map of the country based on a survey applying Western techniques. |
